Schutzhund Training

This challenging sport for dog and owner (trainer) involves
three parts: obedience, tracking and protection. Originally designed as a breed test for the German Sheppard Dog,
this part has expanded to include many countries and working class breeds. Every year, several countries hold
regional and national competitions leading up to the world competition know as the WUSV held under FCI
international rules.

Schutzhund, because of the length and intensity provides a
great platform for dog and handler to bond deeply. When trained properly, Schutzhund can be a great way for you and
your dog to learn how to control aggression as well as test your dog in stressful situations. Your dog also learns
to obey your commands even under an excited state. A Schutzhund trained dog are of the most well behaved dogs in
the world.
Some people view Schutzthund as a way to make a dog aggressive
toward people. On the contrary Schutzhund is a way to control or train a dogs natural abilities to be used in the
proper situation.
Some people who would like to avoid aggression, try to used
Schutzhund protection training more as an obedience exercise, rewarding the dog with the sleeve or "pray object' if
they bark as to ask for the reward, defending their training as a game where their dog only bites the sleeve or
wrap. If this helps them sleep at night, when asked if they train their dog to bite, that is fine by
me.
The fact is, a dog should show aggression when tested in the
protection part of Schutzhund. By all means this is a test, and the decoy or "bad guy" should test the will and
courage of the dog in question. All dogs of any breed will bite if provoked, so there is no need to train a dog to
bite. Schutzhung builds confidence in your dogs ability to protect you and learns control when you teach him/her
when and where it is okay to bite and when not to bite.
A dogs training, socialization and basic character is what
effects its aggressiveness toward people. Genetics will determine whether he/she will have the instincts or courage
to protect its family. Schutzhund gives the handler an idea of how his/her dog will react in a given situation and
teaches the dog to to remain under control of its handler.
